Russia backs Hamas terrorists, calls Israel ‘occupying power’ that ‘does not’ have right to self-defense

Russia has expressed its support of the Hamas terrorist organization in Gaza and has condemned the actions of the Israeli government, calling it an “occupying power” that “does not have a right to self-defense or to defend its citizens and territories from armed attacks.” In a statement released by the Russian Foreign Ministry, Russia accused the Israeli government of “excessive and disproportionate” use of force against Hamas and its supporters. The statement went on to say that Russia “strongly condemns” the actions of the Israeli government and “calls on all parties to refrain from actions that may further exacerbate the situation.” Russia also called for an immediate end to the violence, as well as for the start of a dialogue and the implementation of confidence and security-building measures to bring about a lasting peace in the region.
